The 10 Most Common OpenClaw Errors (And How to Fix Them)

7 min read · March 2026 · By OpenClaw Rescue

Error messages are confusing by design — they're written for developers, not for regular people. Here we've decoded the 10 most common OpenClaw errors and translated them into plain English with specific steps to fix each one.

Error #1
Unauthorized / Invalid API Key
401 Unauthorized

This means OpenClaw tried to connect to the AI service and got rejected. Your API key is either missing, wrong, or expired.

✅ Fix: Go to Settings → find your API key field → re-enter or regenerate your key from the AI provider's website.
Error #2
Connection Refused / Can't Connect
Connection refused

OpenClaw can't reach the internet or the AI service. Usually a network issue or the service is temporarily down.

✅ Fix: Check your internet connection. Try disabling your VPN if you have one. Wait 5 minutes and try again.
Error #3
Rate Limit Exceeded
429 Too Many Requests

You've sent too many messages too quickly. The AI service has limits on how fast you can use it.

✅ Fix: Wait a few minutes before trying again. If this happens constantly, you may need to upgrade your AI API plan.
Error #4
OpenClaw Won't Start / Crashes on Launch
Application Error

OpenClaw starts up and then immediately closes, or never opens at all. Usually caused by a bad update or corrupted settings file.

✅ Fix: Try restarting your computer first. If that doesn't work, look for OpenClaw's data folder and rename the config file (don't delete it) so OpenClaw starts fresh.
Error #5
Gateway Timeout
504 Gateway Timeout

OpenClaw sent a request to the AI and waited too long for a response. The AI service may be overloaded.

✅ Fix: Try again in a few minutes. This is usually temporary and not your fault.
Error #6
Port Already in Use
EADDRINUSE

OpenClaw is trying to use a network "door" (port) that something else already has open. This often happens if OpenClaw didn't shut down cleanly last time.

✅ Fix: Restart your computer — this clears out any stuck processes. Then try launching OpenClaw again.
Error #7
Config File Not Found
ENOENT: no such file

OpenClaw is looking for its settings file and can't find it. This usually happens after moving the application or on a new computer.

✅ Fix: Run OpenClaw's setup/install process again — it will recreate the missing files.
Error #8
Insufficient Permissions
EACCES / Permission denied

OpenClaw doesn't have the right access to read or write files it needs. Common on Macs after an OS update.

✅ Fix: On Mac, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and make sure OpenClaw has the permissions it needs. Try running as administrator.
Error #9
Module Not Found
Cannot find module

A piece of software that OpenClaw depends on is missing. This often happens after a partial update or install.

✅ Fix: Uninstall and reinstall OpenClaw completely. This should reinstall all the pieces it needs.
Error #10
Out of Memory
JavaScript heap out of memory

OpenClaw ran out of memory. This can happen on older computers or if you have a lot of other apps open.

✅ Fix: Close other applications to free up memory. Restart OpenClaw. If it keeps happening, your computer may need more RAM.
